2007 has seen some pretty bad films from Suneel Darshans SHAKALAKA BOOM BOOM, Ashwini Chaudhury’s GOOD BOY BAD BOY and Guddu Dhanoa’s BIG BROTHER, however here comes a film that makes these films seem half decent. KYA LOVE STORY HAI is quiet frankly one of the worst films I’ve ever seen, usually I manage to find something that entertains me in a “bad” movie and I rarely feel like asking for a refund….but this movie crosses all boundaries!

The movie revolves around a highly sentimental, happy-go-lucky youth Arjun (Tusshar) who falls in love with Kaajal (Ayesha Takia). After following her around for a while, he finally manages to start talking to her, and the two become good friends. For Kaajal Arjun is just a friend, while Arjun is madly in love with Kaajal but isn’t able to express his love to her (a dire rehash of Tusshar’s debut film MUJJHE KUCCH KEHNAA HAI). The story takes a twist when Kaajal finds a letter Arjun has written to the girl he loves, and she questions him about who the letter is for, Arjun deliberately asks her how she would reciprocate his love if she were the girl he was in love with? Kaajal's reply leaves Arjun baffled and heart-broken. She loves men who are self-made and hard working and Arjun doesn’t fir the description at all. He mysteriously disappears telling her he will return once he has made something out of himself. In the meantime, a successful and snooty entrepreneur Ranveer [Karan Hukku] meets Kaajal, and though they get off to a rough start, Ranveers mum is convinced that Kaajal is the right girl for him and asks him to get to know her son better. Kaajal is attracted to Ranveer because he is a self-made man and is extremely successful and decides to give him a chance. As fate would have it Arjun returns, and has now made something out of himself, both now yearn for Kaajals love, and who Kaajal chooses in the end forms the crux of the story.

Never have I seen such a confused, contrived, dire and utterly senile film. Writer Rahul Singh must’ve been on crack as he writes the shoddy story borrowing from some of Hindi cinema’s oldest clichés which were best left in the 70’s and 80’s. The initial re-run of MUJJHE KUCCH KEHNA HAI is a pain to watch, and the story has no novelty at all. The love triangle in the second half too is just plain shit! Whats worse is that the characters are so poorly etched out they come across confused and in turn frustrate the viewer till no end. The only thing worse than Rahul Singh’s story is his screenplay. This is a totally haywire piece of work which leaves the viewer exasperated. The story nor the characters never strike a chord with the viewer hence we don’t really care what happens to Arjun, Kaajal or Ranveer. The holes in the screenplay also stand out like a sore thumb. It’s never shown what exactly Tusshar did to become so successful and stand on his own feet hence one never feel for his character like they should. Ranveer’s character too starts out egotistical yet ultimately likeable, however towards the finale he turns in to more of a clichéd anti-hero without any rhyme or reason only to turn into the self-sacrificing lover in the end? In order for a love story to work, the viewer has to vye for the on-screen couple to ultimately end up together, here one doesn’t care who ends up with Kaajal as the only thing on my mind was “when the hell will this film finish”????

Director Lovely Singh has made one of the most shockingly poor debut’s I’ve ever seen in my entire lifetime. It’s evident that Lovely has NO IDEA how to direct a film, and is only here due to his close connections with Tusshar Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. He directs the movie in a crude and episodic manner reminding us of the worst films from an era bygone. Whats even worse is that he takes himself seriously instead of paying homage to the genre. The narrative in the movie is the worst blow as the movie switches between the love story and what can only be called one of the most painful comedy tracks I’ve ever seen, yes the separate comedy tracks that I used to interject in the most crucial moments which I thought had died a well deserved death return with all it’s ugly glory. And the most unbearable thing here is that the jokes are so lame, so dumb, so rude and so crude that it leaves the viewer with an “OMG WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY THINKING” reaction. This dissolves what little interest the viewer has in the actual story. Also by piling on cliché after cliché the movie becomes a laborious torture, imagine this….Arjun who returns after mysteriously becoming successful is going to see his beloved Kaajal to finally tell her that he loves her, he gets a ride from someone who just happens to be Ranveer and the two talk about their respective loves (kinda like Rishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna in Yash Chopra’s CHANDNI as they sing “TU MUJHE SUNAA MAIN TUJHE SUNAOO APNI PREM KAHANAI”. Lovely Singh, please get the hell out of Bollywood, money and connections cannot buy talent.

The performances in the movie are below the mark too.

Tusshar Kapoor is absolutely pitiful playing the silent lover here again. He’s perfect for the role given his “common boy” looks, however in an desperate attempt to evoke public sympathy his character comes across as absolutely pitiful and a complete loser that one doesn’t actually care whether he gets the girl or not. Tusshars delivery here is monotone and wooden and his facial expressions are non existent. After BAD BOY GOOD BOY this is another poor performance from Tusshar, and one can only wish he concentrates more on the SHOOTOUT AT LOKHANDWALA and GOLMAAL type roles than these kinds of films. He tries hard to look fashionable and trendy with his extensive wardrobe, however some of his clothes are very poor.

Ayesha Takia is extremely amiable and plays her part rather well. She is spirited, cute and bubbly and is the thing about this sorry movie. And director Lovely Singh has ensured there are plenty of close-up’s of her top half!

Newcomer Karan Hukku looks like a cross between John Abraham and Himanshu Malik and acts like Apoorva Agnihotri in PARDES. A below par debut though he does have screen presence.

The two actors who play Tusshars friends should be extradited from Bollywood for one of the most painful comedy tracks ever. Director Lovely Singh’s idea of comedy is two idiots chasing women like a pair of sleazebags wanting to get laid, only for their plans to go awry each time as they get beaten up. Picture this, one of the friends pretends he has had a near death experience and fakes being unconscious in the hope that he will get mouth-to-mouth by a beautiful babe, however an African midget who is their friend ends up giving him mouth-to-mouth…end of joke, get the drift?

Also the movie is set in South Africa however there is nothing in the movie apart from the locales that would indicate this is South Africa.

Pritam’s music is OK. The IT’S ROCKING number is outstanding, and Kareena Kapoor dances like a dream and looks absolutely STUNNING! This is the best thing about the movie apart from Ayesha Takia’s..umm..Pillows!

Technically the movie is below expectations too.

It’s very very rare for me to feel cheated and angry that my time has been wasted, but KYA LOVE STORY HAI left me angry. Cinema at it’s worst!
