It's finally here. The much awaited and much hyped modern epic, Umrao Jaan. There has been plenty said about it – while not all has been good, the over all reception has been possitive, much like it has been for most of the other remakes and homages to classics. No matter what else has been said about the film, good or bad, the one thing that everyone has been unanimous about is the screen chemistry of Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan.
AB Jr's appreaciation for the lovely lady can be seen through out the film, notably while she dances for him. Of course, one might argue his was the easier part; justing sitting back and watching the beauty dance.
However, Abhishek would argue, he disagrees about it being oh so easy.
So, what's so difficult about sitting and watching a beautiful woman in breath taking costumes dance for you? Well, Abhi says, "Luckily I did not have to dance; which I'm sure, will come as a great relief to the audiences as well.
But sitting and watching was challenging in itself.
The first day, I was informed, I just had to sit on a gadda and watch the enactment of a mujra with a 'courtesan' performing in front of me.
I said 'That's easy!' But the second day, it was the same thing and it started getting to me; when I had to sit in a new posture with a new expression.
Now how long can you just sit and watch somebody dance? It became challenging to sit in different ways alone."
Aishwarya laughs as she recounts the episode.
"Yes, he complained to JP Dutta that in all his films, though the female character has been very dignified, every story has been male dominated.
And here it's all about shayari, ada, jhumka, duppatta, jhoomars; we also teased him about all the women around him - Shabana, Ayesha, Divya - all very strong women.
Not at all girly. We ended up teasing him so much he was ready to scream.
In fact, at one point he shouted, 'Bring out the guns! I'm tired of sitting! I need to go get my army uniform!' It was hilarious."
So, while is sounds like the dream of many a man, just sitting and watching 'the most beautiful woman in the world' dance for them. To be fair, not many would really want to sit for hours and days watching the same woman do the same dance.
If nothing else, if one didn't actually cry out for a change like Abhishek, I am sure ones backside would be.
