Time Out With Preity
By Krishna Jewel | June 28, 2006
Time Out With PreityThe IIFA-Glamorous Star of the Year winner, Preity Zinta, who is currently shooting with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar for Shirish Kunder's debut film Jaaneman, recently answered a few questions about her career, films and life in general.

She was asked about the recent IIFA Style award and what makes her a style icon.

She replied, "I wasn't expecting the Glamorous Star of the Year award. It was a pleasant surprise. How do I like being a style icon? Well any tag is fine by me as long as it is positive."

Regarding the stories of her not being given a decent make up room at IIFA in Dubai, she frowns before saying, "How a little thing gets blown out of proportion. It was a minor glitch. There were too many people back stage and too little place for everybody to be accommodated... It got sorted out later."

Returning to the topic of style, she was asked how she would describe her personal style. "I have always believed in being comfortable, wearing comfortable clothes. I don't believe in wearing something just because it's in fashion. I feel style is personal and reflects your state of mind. If I'm feeling on top of the world, then I wear something which reflects my happy state of mind and if I am feeling low, then again my clothes will show that."

On the topic of her recent films, she states she has yet to see Krrish, which one may find surprising bearing in mind she was in the Koi...Mil Gaya sequel. However, Preity is a very busy lady.

"You know, a lot of people have been calling me and congratulating me for Krrish and I'm like 'It's not my movie' to which they say, 'But you were so good in that one scene in the hospital' and I'm like 'Yeah, right, thank you!' I'm sure Hrithik must have done a fantastic job as usual as the superhero. He can't go too wrong, after all he's playing my son right!" On the topic of children, she says her most unusual role to date was giving birth to a superhero. "Throughout my career, I have been fighting to have a kid, be it in Kya Kehna or in Salaam Namaste. Finally, I gave birth to a superhero!" says Preity.

Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (KANK) will be Zinta's next release, coming in August. The film is about marital relationships, the difficulties that arise when one falls out of love and infidelity. Preity plays Rhea Saran, opposite Shah Rukh Khan who plays her husband, Dev Saran.

"Rhea is the fashion editor of a magazine in New York City. She's something I haven't played before. She's distinct and has a very strong characterisation."

Preity was asked if she believes in the sanctity of marriage and would she give an erring husband a second chance. "I do believe in the institution of marriage and I personally feel it should last forever. I want mine to last forever. But just because I worked in a film on marital relationships doesn't make me a 'guru' on the topic. KANK is a different take on marriages."

The shoot of KANK wasn't all seriousness; there were plenty of fun and games as well.

"While we were shooting for Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna in New York, it was Halloween night and I was dying to be a part of the parade.

I got hold of Aryan and Suhana (Shah Rukh Khan's kids), who 'chewed up' Shah Rukh's head to take them to a costume shop. I picked up a Bat Girl costume, Aryan dressed up as a monster and Suhana as an angel. Shah Rukh also got himself a monstrous mask and Abhishek (Bachchan) had a samba dancer mask, which was really funny."

Her current film, Jaaneman, which is completely different from KANK, she describes it as a "sweet, fun loving, feel good film which will appeal to people from four year olds to 104-year-olds."

Soon she will start work on Shaad Ali's Jhoom Barabar Jhoom with Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol. "I had worked with Bobby over seven years ago in Soldier. He's a dear friend and I'm looking forward to working with him again."

On a personal note, she has no qualms about what is important to her. "I would be an insecure wreck if I didn't have my own personal life. I don't want to end up a lonely person. That scares me. I respect my colleagues, but I don't want them to be a part of my personal sphere. I have no intentions of having a special relationship with any of my male co-stars. It's a conscious decision and I think I am the only one in the industry who's made such a decision."

Preity is resolute that she will never be a part of the 'rat race'. "I don’t want to do award winning films just for the heck of it. I live my life the way I choose. There is no pressure. I don't have a family to feed, so I can do what I want. I don't want to sacrifice my present to become a legend. Time is too precious. I work hard on my films, but I work harder to find some time for myself. This rat race is vicious and all those who get into it, end up becoming pathetic creatures. All you are left with is bubbles, which are bound to burst some day."
