Bachchan Raises 26,000 GBP For Blast VictimsLondon: In the British House of Commons all eyes were on cinema legend Amitabh Bachchan as he helped raise 26,000 GBP (about Rs 22 lakh) for the victims of July 11, 2006 Mumbai blasts.

Two days after he became the first Indian film star to receive an honorary doctorate from De Monfort University in Leicester on Wednesday, Bachchan was recognised by the House of Commons through an early day motion signed by over 60 signatories for his contribution to cinema.

"This trip has been one of the most memorable ones. Primarily because of the recognition that de Montford University gave me the opportunity and Keith Vaz for bringing me to these portals of governance and to meet people you read about in newspapers," Bachchan says.

Bachchan was also presented with a portrait of Westminster signed by Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Amongst his political hosts were leader of the House of Commons Jack Straw and foreign secretary Margaret Beckett.

A dinner to celebrate the honorary degree of Doctorate of Arts conferred on the 64 year old actor was hosted by leading NRI and Labour MP Keith Vaz in the House of Commons late Friday.

Responding to the myriad of honors bestowed upon him, a visibly moved Bachchan said, "It is the most memorable day of my life. I am extremely happy for all of your presence for a noble cause.

"While there can't be a value for human life, whatever little we can do to express sympathy to the bereaved families of the Mumbai bomb blasts will go a long way," he said.

Bachchan said by honouring him with a Doctorate, the UK University has honoured the entire Indian film industry.

He revealed "There are eight or nine productions" in which he is engaged. Stating that he would be returning to London for shooting in August, Bachchan said the working facilities and the quality of technical work were good in the UK.
