Shilpa Shetty Speaks Up
By Krishna Jewel | August 16, 2006
Shilpa Shetty Speaks UpShilpa's making news...but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. Controversies seem to dog her every step. She's become fed up of the public glare and has decided to remain silence for several weeks now. However, DNA managed to coax Shilpa Shetty into giving her side of the story:

Why do you have this knack for stirring up controversies? Yeah, even I don't know why. I'm in the news for the strangest reasons and there are a quite a few of them actually. (Laughs) I think the media has just gone berserk, there's hardly any consistency in their reporting. Certain cases of mine are sub judice, so I can't comment on them. But the print and electronic media keeps putting ideas in the minds of readers and viewers which can be quite harmful.

You sound very upset. I am very upset. I would request the media to get their facts right before saying or writing something. There are serious issues in our country which need attention. But every day, I see only trivial matters being reported. There's a limit to fluff and fabrications. I just want the media to address issues intelligently.

Is that why you've avoiding the press? Look, I'm in the film industry for the last 13 years. I just don't have the energy to clarify my stand to the media. I want to do quality work. Full stop. Giving interviews has become a harrowing experience for me. Moreover, the press reports news according to their convenience.

When there was a non-bailable warrant against me in the obscenity case, they put it on the front page. But when the High Court issued a stay order on the warrant, it was published as a small news item on page seven. These things have disturbed me a lot.

Were you surprised when charges of obscenity, vis-a-vis your photographs, were issued against you? Of course, I was surprised. Do you think I am obscene?

Nope Thank you. The problem in our country is that the judiciary is seriously over-worked, PILs make it even tougher for them. I respect our judiciary which has no option but to respond to these PILs. I don't know if it will ever stop, I can just hope and wait.

Your mother had a tiff with the press in Kolkata recently. Oh, that was totally blown out of proportion. I was in Kolkata for a promotional event for Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar. There was complete chaos at the event with hordes of cameramen and photographers. And there was this guy who hit my mom on her lower hip to come forward to click my pictures.

I don't blame my mom, it was a reflex action which anyone would have taken. She just turned back and pushed the guy away. In that moment of anger, she asked the man to behave himself. Later of course, he apologised and that was that.

Why are you being linked with some guy or the other constantly? Maybe because I'm single. Last year, my name was linked with three different guys. Have a heart! I'm neither crazy nor a man-eater.

What about your reported liaison with the Dus director Anubhav Sinha? (Irritated) That's rubbish. Anubhav, as they say, is a good friend. Why should anyone have a problem with that?

Where does that leave Milind Deora? Why, why, why? Why drag his name in again? The day I find my soulmate, I'll announce it to the world.

Do you think there's any other heroine who has a figure like yours? Hello...that's quite a left-handed compliment. But I would like to believe there's more to me than my figure. In the movies, it's very difficult to live on looks alone. One has to be talented to make a mark in such a competitive environment. Period. There has been a paradigm shift in the roles that I've portrayed recently. I've become an actress who can look good and emote as well. I know I'm being immodest...but isn't honesty a bigger virtue than modesty?

Do you think you got enough recognition for Phir Milenge? Honestly, I think I did. Audiences and critics loved me in Phir Milenge.

How do you look at the career of your sister Shamita Shetty? She doesn't seem to be getting anywhere. I don't agree, I think she's doing fine for herself. Her acting skills have been appreciated which I think is positive news.

Isn't the constant comparison with you harming her career? But that's inevitable, na? I'm always willing to stand by Shamita. I know she will make it. I may do everything for her but when it comes to acting, she has to do it herself. Even if I may like to, I cannot act for her.

In a recent interview, Akshay Kumar said if he ever came across you, he would say a polite hello and move on. What would you do if you met him? Why should it just be a polite hello? It would be a hearty hello from my side. I have nothing against Akshay Kumar, we have done quite a few shows together. There is no ill-feeling from my side. Life's too short to hold any grudges.
