We all know and love Shah Rukh Khan's naughty sense of humour. We also know and love that the superstar has no interest in politics of any sort - be it national, professional or personal."Why is it that everytime I show my films to Sonia Gandhi and her family, people think that I'm entering politics? Why doesn't it occur to people that they may be entering Bollywood?"
Shah Rukh Khan is just an entertainer, more than just; he is the ultimate entertainer - be it as the devoted Raj Aryan in Mohabbatein, the brooding Dev in KANK or even as a dancer at private functions, he gives it his all and performs with his whole heart and being.
"Entertainment is my job. I've no qualms singing and dancing at weddings, on the streets or on a stage. If you are running a business, you can pay me and I will do the Chhaiya Chhaiya for you. For charity, I will do it for free," says the star, although he is often accused of being too commercial and over exposed.
"MF Husain once told me that he and I have corrupted art and films by being too commercial. Since I'm not the highest paid star in the country, why shouldn't I make money using my star status? After all, how many people can dance at a wedding and get paid for it?"
So, one asks if Shah Rukh is really the biggest star? "That is the positive side of the population explosion in our country. Every fourth face is Indian and by default, every fourth face in the world recognises me because I'm the face of Indian movies."
Ask his friend Karan Johar about Shah Rukh's super stardom and he says, "At the end of the day, Shah Rukh and Gauri are normal, middle-class Delhiites. He is too ordinary to be a superstar. He is a guy who is uncomfortable in a typical 'society' atmosphere. He lives an ordinary life. He is a guy who spends four hours in the loo. Can you imagine that the biggest star in India takes all his important decisions sitting on the pot?"
"Considering the kind of films that Indian filmmakers make, I think that is really the best place to read the scripts," quips Shah Rukh. But four hours? "I need moments of solitude when I'm at home and it is not really possible with kids running around in the house. What I really do is keep the seat down, sit on it and read a book."
Well, perhaps we have found the real reason behind why the megastar is never on time for anything - anywhere. The average waiting time for Shah Rukh's arrival is two hours!
"That's because I believe I can make it. One day I will be able to make it on time too. When I wake up in the morning, I believe that I will be the best father, husband, entertainer."
Shah Rukh finds rumours of his supposed rivalry with the Bachchans amusing for the most part. "I'm not competing. In fact, I am learning to maintain a stubble and I thought of taking lessons from Abhishek. When I say I don't want any politics, I mean all kinds of politics - personal and professional."
