Bachchan's Saafa BluesAbhishek’s got turban trouble Wednesday, September 27, 2006 20:21 IST

On the sets of JP Dutta's Umrao Jaan, Abhishek Bachchan had a problem he had never had to face before.

As the film required actors to be attired in period costumes and a good deal of jewellery, it took a long time for the actors to prepare for a shot. However, Abhishek had an additional burden — the 'saafa' or traditional turban he had to wear. The turban was so long that it took at least ten minutes to tie around Abhishek's head. JP had to appoint a special 'saafawala' to be available for Abhishek whenever he needed the turban to be tied.

Just before the shot, the saafawala would tie the turban around Abhishek's head. However, between shots Abhishek would take it off, as he found it rather cumbersome. However, often when the next shot was ready and Abhishek required the saafawala, he had simply disappeared.

As a result, everyone would busily look for the saafawala, causing the shot to be delayed.

Ultimately, the unit came up with a solution. A production hand was taught how to tie the saafa and was positioned near Abhishek throughout the shoot.

Henceforth Abhishek's saafa were no more.
