Mumbai: Deepa Mehta's film Water has been met with controversy and has been in the news ever since work began on it.Although the film was initially released in 2005, it found no distribution in India. However, the third installment in filmmaker Deepa Mehta's element trilogy following Fire and Earth, has finally found a distributor for release in India.
Who is willing to beat the odds and brave the much-anticipated resistance? This would be filmmaker B R Chopra's son, Ravi Chopra.
During its filming in Varanasi in 2000, Water faced very stiff antagonism, causing filming to be abandoned.
As a result, Deepa Mehta had to re-shoot with a new cast and new location in Sri Lanka.
Despite the international release of the film in 2005, as well as winning several accolades, including Seema Biswas winning the Genie Best Actress award, the film did not find a distributor in India, until now.
"John and I were shooting for a song for Babul and he asked me if I wanted to watch a film? We watched Water and I loved the film, it’s a beautiful film. I thought that people should get an opportunity to watch the film," says Chopra.
With stars Lisa Ray, Seema Biswas and John Abraham, Water revolves around the plight of widows.
John Abraham, who plays a lawyer in the film, is very excited about the release in India. "Audiences are missing out on a very good film," says Abraham.
Last minute details are still to be worked out, however, Chopra plans to release Water in the last week of September or the first week of October.
