Hold The Doors For The Don
By Krishna Jewel | September 09, 2006
Hold The Doors For The DonShah Rukh Khan has become very serious about his health since his neck surgery. After his injury, he had not been able to do as much of a work out as he would have liked. However, since his surgery and recovery, he has become quite dedicated. While he was in Malaysia on the Don shoot, he wanted to keep up with his workouts by using one of the gymnasiums at the Crown Plaza five - star hotel where he was put up. Shah Rukh requested access to a gym where he could work out late at night after pack-up.

However, there was a problem.

The gym in which SRK wanted to work out closed at 8 pm, yet the shoot wound up late every night. After a while, SRK began missing his workouts. So finally, his producer Ritesh Sidwani made a request to the manager of the hotel to extend the gym hours, keeping it open till 12.30 am.

"Shah Rukh is very particular about his health and his workout sessions. Not just he, Farhan and I used to use the gym late at night too," says Ritesh Sidwani. Finding it open late, of course, even Priyanka Chopra began working out in it.

"This was supposed to be the best gym in Singapore, and they don't like to bend their rules for anyone. But we explained to them that we had a genuine problem, they agreed to let all of us work out late night," adds Ritesh.

So, will we see a pumped-up SRK in Don? "No," he replies. "SRK sports a lean look. He will not flex his muscles or take off his shirt in the film."

SRK has always been fond of sports. However, injuries and work keep him from his favourite sports. He plays a little football now and then with his children, but often knee pain sidelines him. When he took on Asoka, he started working out again. Not with the goal of becoming 'pumped', more to be lean and fit looking. It was then that his trainer Prashant Sawant stepped into the picture. Prashant is part of the superstar's close coterie, a friend and confidante, as well as trainer.

"Prashant helps SRK to work out at his place every night. He never skips his workout. He works out for 30 minutes just before sleeping, and then wakes up very early," reveals our source.

SRK has been very clear about the fact that he doesn't want to look brawny. For him working out is more a matter of fitness, and building muscle tone and health. When SRK began having back and neck problems as a result of his injury, Prashant suggested some special exercises for him. He does leg and back exercises, as well as chest and biceps, with a stress on cardiovascular workouts.
