While 2006 was a great one for the Hindi film industry, 2007 has turned out to be a damp squib so far. So far only Guru (72 %) has managed to make a major dent in the box office, as that film has reached superhit status both domestically and internationally. Post Guru, however, no films have made a big dent at the box office. The last few weeks have witnessed a myriad of box office flops, although some of the films have gotten decent to good reviews. Starting with Nishabd, the Ram Gopal Varma directed film got decent reviews for a film with its subject, however that didn't help it at the box office. The film is currently at a 54%. Since then, both 1971 and Water managed to get good to very good reviews (61% and 71% respectively) however both failed at the box office. Red was a disaster with the critics (25%) and failed the box office as well.
Last weeks releases were more of the same, with both Just Married and Hattrick getting below average reviews. Hattrick currently sits at a 46% while Just Married is worse, at a 41%. Neither films have been performing well at the box office.
All eyes are on Vipul Shah's Namastey London which opens this Friday. Starring Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Upen Patel and Rishi Kapoor, the film is hoping to break the cold streak of the last couple of months. Shah's last two films, Aankhen and Waqt - The Race Against Time (57%) both also starred Akshay Kumar (as well as Amitabh Bachchan) and were hits at the box office. Let's hope that Namastey London hits the bulls eye as well. The music has done well as it is currently at a 64% (for all the music reviews or to listen to the soundtrack, click here). Make sure to keep checking back here later this week as we add reviews for the film.
