While Bollywood stealing from other countries is very common, film makers may have to be more cautious. With the growing popularity of Bollywood films overseas, film studios are starting to take notice when their ideas are stolen. The first casualty may be the super hit Partner (58%). Sony Pictures Entertainment along with Overbrook Entertainment are rumored to be filing a $30 million copyright infringement suit against the films producers, Eros Entertainment and K Sera Sera.Partner, which stars Salman Khan and Govinda, stole the premise of the film from the Hollywood hit Hitch, which starred Will Smith and was produced by Overbrook Entertainment for Sony Pictures. Like Smith in Hitch, Salman plays a love doctor in Partner, who comes to the rescue of those who can't woo their women without some help and helps Govinda to find his love.
"Foreign studios are making a beeline for India so they are more aware of the Hindi film market and they are bound to take action if their plots are lifted with permission," filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj said.
One can only hope that if the suit does happen, that it will lead to more original ideas from the Bollywood film fraternity.
