Critics Update: 'Drona' (D) & 'Kidnap' (D+) Disappoint
By Raj Giri | October 03, 2008
Disappointing is the word that best sums up both of this week's new releases. With many critic's reviews now in for both films, it's clear that neither film has come close to even matching expectations.

First off was the much anticipated Drona, starring Abhishek Bachchan and directed by Bachchan's childhood friend, Goldie Behl. The two came together for Behl's directorial debut, Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai, which tanked at the box office. Drona looks to be headed in the same direction.

With 24 reviews counted for the film, 4 have been positive, 2 have been average and the remaining 18 have been negative. The film is at a 38%, which earns it a 'D' (click here to see our grading scale). If you include reviews that aren't counted for the grade, there are 31 reviews total with 5 being positive, 3 average and 23 being negative. The general consensus for the film is that while the special effects are impressive, the screenplay is confusing and the film lacks soul.

Sapna Wong, in her exclusive review here at AllBollywood.com wrote that the film "doesn’t deliver" and that "there were too many questions left unanswered, too many holes in the story, too many puzzles and riddles that we’ve seen before, and nothing to connect us to this magical world". Faring only slightly better was Sanjay Gadhavi's latest film, Kidnap starring Sanjay Dutt, Minissha Lamba, Imran Khan, Vidya Malvade and Malaika Arora. A lot was expected of the film as Gadhavi's last film, Dhoom 2 (B), impressed critics and broke box office records. It was also Imran Khan's first release since Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na (B+), which also impressed critics and was a super hit at the box office.

Unfortunately, Kidnap is a damp squib. With 23 reviews in total in for the film, the film has only managed to garner 1 positive review, with 5 being average and the remaining 17 being negative. It is at a 40%, earning the film a D+. 16 reviews were counted for the grade and of those reviews 1 was positive, 2 were average and the remaining 13 were negative. More reviews should be in over the weekend for both films, so make sure to keep checking back daily.
