Critics Update: New Releases Unimpressive
By Raj Giri | September 15, 2008
The three week streak of positive reviews with Mumbai Meri Jaan, Rock On!!, A Wednesday ! and Tahaan came to a screeching halt this weekend with The Last Lear (C), Ru Ba Ru (D) and 1920 (C-) all scoring a C or worse.

The best reviewed of the new releases, The Last Lear, had some impressive pre-release buzz with the film screening to mostly impressive reviews on the film festival circuit last year. However, the desi audience weren't as impressed. The Last Lear is currently at a C (50%). Of the 13 reviews counted for the grade, 4 have been positive, 4 average and the remaining 5 were negative. Of all the 19 reviews in for the film, 5 have been positive, 8 average and the remaining 6 were negative (to see how we determine which reviews are counted for a film's grade, click here). The Amitabh Bachchan - Preity Zinta - Arjun Rampal starrer also got a very limited release overseas, which is strange considering the star cast. The film is also performing poorly at the box office, which was expected for what is basically an art house release. For all news, videos and reviews for The Last Lear, click here.

Faring better at the box office but worse with the critics was Vikram Bhatt's latest film, 1920 (C-, 47%). Bhatt continues to churn out mediocre films on a frequest basis. Since Bhatt's Elaan (D+) released on January 14, 2005, he's directed the following films: Jurm (D), Deewane Huye Paagal (C+), Ankahee (C-), Red (F), Life Mein Kabhie Kabhiee (D+) and Speed (F). So since 2005 Bhatt has directed 8 films and the best reviewed one was Deewane Huye Paagal, which only managed a C+.

As for 1920, the film is currently at a C- (47%). Of the 21 reviews counted for the grade, 8 have been positive, 4 average and the remaining 9 were negative. Of all the 26 reviews in for the film, 9 have been positive, 7 average and the remaining 10 were negative. For all news, videos and reviews for 1920, click here.

Also releasing was Ru Ba Ru. Not much was expected of the film and the reviews lived up to the expectations. The film is currently at a D (37%). Of the 15 reviews counted for the grade only 1 was positive, 1 was average and the remaining 13 were negative. For all news and reviews for Ru Ba Ru, click here.

Of the recent releases, Rock On!! remains rock steady at an A- (73%). The film still is the only major release since Lage Raho Munnabhai (A, 81%) to have no negative reviews. A Wednesday ! is also strong at an A- (72%) and of it's 30 reviews, 29 have been positive and only 1 was negative.

The next couple of weeks don't feature anything too major releasing until Drona hits the screens on October 2nd. This weekend sees the releases of Welcome to Sajjanpur, Hulla and Saas Bahu Aur Sensex. Be sure to keep glued to AllBollywood.com as reviews for all three films start to come in later this week.
