Just recently the Nawabs of Lucknow questioned the authenticity of the Jodha-Akbar story. Before that issue is resolved, Ashutosh Gowarikar has landed in further trouble. This time it is over the use of animals during the shoot. The Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (SPCA) has sent a notice to Gowarikar to stop the use of animals in the shoot immediately.
Apparently, for a particular sequence in the film, Gowarikar is said to have used 80 elephants, 160 horses and 65 camels. Prompting local division of the animal rights organization to send a notice to him under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Additionally, animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi has joined the group to oppose the shoot.
A source from the film's producers, UTV, said it is Gowarikar's responsibility to take all the necessary permissions. Apparently, UTV faced similar problems over a scene in Rang De Basanti featuring Aamir Khan riding a horse. The scene had to be edited finally.
