B.O. update: '
Dhoom 2' earth-shattering opening Yash Raj Films' has a reason to celebrate!
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna has crossed 100 days in Mumbai.
Now, the Chopras have yet another reason to rejoice!
Their latest venture, Dhoom 2, had a mind-blowing opening at all corners. The response at every centre, big or small, is a phenomenal 100%, which means a record-breaking first weekend of business. The opening is on par with Krrish, which was the best opener and the biggest hit so far this year, (except in the Mumbai circuit, where Lage Raho Munnabhai is No. 1).
The audience response is excellent, Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai are being greatly appreciated, followed closely by Uday Chopra.
Released on 24 November, the film has mind-blowing cinematography and is full of hi-tech action sequences. However, despite a strong star cast, which includes Aishwarya Rai, Abhishekh Bachchan, Bipasha Basu and Uday Chopra, it is Hrithik who takes the cake - and eats it too. The actor has broken out of the jinx as some called it of only having hits under daddys banner.
Additionally, he has also broken the mold he has always been thrust into, that of the good goody boy – good son, good, brother, good lover, good patriot, etc. His role is Dhoom 2 is not so cut and dry.
With this rich blend of cast, story, action and just the right touch of much expected and desired masala, Dhoom2 has certainly managed to strike gold at the box office all over India, it has not, however, done so in Goa. Not yet, at least. The film did not open in Goa because of the on-going International Film Festival of India (IFFI) as it was feared that the film might hamper the proceedings of the festival.
Also, the film faced some difficulties releasing at some multiplexes in Delhi and U.P. Sanjay Ghai, who controls most of the multiplexes in Delhi-U.P. says, "Dhoom 2 could not be released here as the producer - distributor were asking for Mumbai's share of 60 per cent from the multiplex." Single screen theatre Payal Talkies in Gurgaon had acquired Dhoom 2 for a minimum guarantee of Rs 500,000. Therefore, the film's non-run at some multiplexes proved to be a goldmine for Payal Talkies. In Punjab the film opened to packed houses. Excluding UFOs, DLPs and E-City digitals, Dhoom 2 was released with a record number of approximately 175 prints in the Mumbai circuit, where the film has registered nearly 100 per cent in most of the cinemas.
However, as good as the opening week collections are shaping up to be, it has yet to be seen if the film can hold its own in the coming weeks, or if the novelty will wear off. The biggest indicator will be returning ticket sales.
