Shah Rukh Khan has been the reigning king in Hindi Cinema for close to two decades now. When it comes to the industry, he is the man with 'the Midas touch', be it a film he is starring in and / or producing or a product he is endorsing, or now as host of KBC, he is the golden boy and in high demand.Khan has billions, yes, billions of female fans - and plenty of male ones too, for that matter – across the globe. As a result, his films on average have huge Box Office returns, at home and abroad. As happens with any star or producer, a few of his films have fared a bit better abroad, but rarely does the actor have an out right flop.
Men and boys of all ages imitate his style, from his hair to his fashions – on screen and off – he is their 'role-model'. In fact, he has even been compared to the legendary Dilip Kumar.
Advertising execs know this as well and seek him for a diverse range of products. Shah Rukh is the brand ambassador for a myriad of products and services such as ICICI bank, Video-Con home appliances, Santro cars, Airtel mobile, health and beauty products such as Lux soap and Navratna Cool Talc, Sunfeast snacks, Compaq Presario computers, as well as the soft drink, Pepsi. Happily for the execs, people of all age groups and walks of life seek to use the products he endorses.
No matter where this ultimate megastar goes in the world, he is recognised and usually mobbed by fans, unless some how he manages to avoid being the focus of attention. A feat next to impossible for a man with literally several billion fans the world over.
In addition to purchasing the products he endorses and queuing for hours to see his films, they also belong to fan clubs and the modern equivalent - the fan forum.
These are Internet sites and groups where fans can gather together from across the globe to discuss and debate their faves, their films and other projects. As well as take part in different on and often off site events and celebrations about, for and sometimes involving, their favourite stars; anything from helping to promote their faves and their latest project to gathering together to celebrate his or her birthday or other special event.
One such site which is dedicated to Shah Rukh Khan, among the many other things they do, puts out a special fan mag, which Shah Rukh always makes sure he has a copy of.
This past spring in a bid to express their adoration and admiration for the king, they presented him with a special award that the site members paid for and one of the administrators travelled to India to present to him.
Wafa, one of the administrators for PlanetSRK, said, "I came up with the idea during the hype of Paheli being selected as entry to Oscars, and he was lobbying for nomination but didn't win. I thought, we can present him with one and tell him that we still love and appreciate his work and think he's the best whether Paheli wins the oscars or not." She goes on to say, "I enclosed a letter to him with the award telling him the same."
Back in March of this year, Wafa and Lida, the presenter of the television show 'Bollywood Hills', visited Mumbai and Red Chillies Entertainment. They were to give the award and a copy of the fan mag to Khan in person, however due to flight difficulties, they were delayed and Shah Rukh had to return to Malaysia where he was shooting for Don. Although both women have met Shah Rukh on several occasions via Lida's television programmes, one is always disappointed when they can't have an audience with the king.
However, they met with Khan's assistant and gave him a copy of the first edition of the mag, cleverly titled 'I-Khan', as well as the specially commissioned award.
The award is shaped like a rising star, and Wafa says, "I wanted something different than all the awards that SRK received. (Different) look and something worthy of his calibre at the same time."
"I had them engrave Shah Rukh Khan's name on top of the award where you see the star shape, and in the bottom on the base it said: Love and Appreciation Star award 2006, PlanetSRK.com, Shah Rukh Khan."
During his next visit home from Malaysia, Shah Rukh finally got to see his specially commissioned award. He was very pleased and touched by this expression of love. His assistant reported to Wafa that Shah Rukh was 'very happy and grateful for his fans love, he thought the award was lovely and loved it'. "He was gracious enough to take the time to take not one, but 2 pics for us," Wafa goes on to say.
King Khan has received awards for a vast number of films, however, it seems no matter how many awards for his films and other work he receives, the love of his fans will always be the true reward for the Baadshah of Bollywood.
