Apne Unit Leaves Wake Of Rubbish
By Krishna Jewel | September 01, 2006
Apne Unit Leaves Wake Of RubbishRajkot: The unit of Apne, which comprised some of the biggies of Hindi cinema like the Deol khandaan, Katrina Kaif and Shilpa Shetty, apparently left the indoor stadium in Rajkot a mess, littered with rubbish and liquor bottles.

On Friday, angry Congress workers performed a "shuddhikaran" (purification) ceremony by sprinkling the stadium with Gangajal.

Director Anil Sharma of Gadar fame chose the RMC-run stadium beacuse of its "international standards." However, at the end of their 10 days there, apparently the unit left the place in a terrible state, as well as the fact that the unit consumed liquor, authorities also alleged, despite a board announcing its prohibition was put up in the stadium.

Additionally, the day after the unit packed up, more than 80 chairs, railings, and windowpanes of the wash room and wooden court of the indoor stadium were found damaged.

Constructed at the cost of Rs 2.5 crore, the stadium won the National Award of Excellence in Structural Designing from the American Concrete Institute (Indian chapter) last year. Owing to the many facilities provided, Sharma shot a boxing match sequence there.

Whilst RMC authorities declared the damage would be repaired from the deposit given by the films producer, they have no explanation as to why liquor was consumed there, choosing instead to shift the responsibility.

"A deposit of Rs 1.5 lakh was taken from the producer. The repair work will be done from that deposit," said Municipal Commissioner Mukesh Kumar.

When Mukesh Kumar was asked about the consumption of liquor, he said, "It's the police's duty to keep vigil and RMC cannot be blamed."

Mayor Dhansukh Bhanderi said: "How will we know who consumed liquor? There were around 300 members in the unit, not every one is alike."

On the other hand, police officials said as the indoor stadium is on RMC premises, it's the civic body's responsibility to keep a check there.

"The premises are owned by RMC and so it is their job to keep a check there," said Rajkot Commissioner of Police K Nityanandam, adding, "Police can act only if the RMC comes forward with a complaint".

The Congress, which "cleansed" the indoor stadium with Ganga waters on Friday, alleged that RMC gave a 'free hand' to the film unit in order to get cheap publicity. "Even if the film unit had a permit, liquor is prohibited inside the stadium. Not only did they consume liquor, they left empty bottles in the corridors. As many as 15 bottles were found," said Congress city president Jaswantsinh Bhatti, adding, "The Congress has demanded that a complaint be registered against the unit."

Bhatti said that by giving permission to shoot in a sports complex, the BJP has left the world-class stadium damaged. "The stadium remained closed for 10 days. The entire RMC machinery, including staff, vehicles and officials, were used by the film unit," Bhatti complained.
