No, the actress won't be reaching for the hair dye for grey hair just yet. Rather, for the first time the actress will be playing a character with shades of grey, in Onir's Bas Ek Pal.

After working with Juhi in My Brother Nikhil, the idea of giving her character shades of grey came to Onir. "Juhi has always played the usual one-dimensional characters and it was a challenge for me as a director to cast her as a woman who is unhappy in her married life and resorts to doing things that an out-and-out positive character wouldn't do," says Onir.

Since her debut, Juhi has always played the bubbly girl-next-door. "I must admit, that it was not an easy task to approach Juhi for the role. I was hesitant because she has a set image and it's difficult to ignore that image. But I decided to give it a try, and she agreed," adds Onir.

However, the director refuses to call the character 'black'. "I don't believe in out-and-out negative roles. Every human being is grey, and that's natural. Juhi is not a villain in the film. She has many layers, where grey is the predominant layer. One needs to understand her point of view. She has her own reasons for being grey or doing what she does," explains Onir.

Juhi said, "I have worked with Onir before and I like his sensibility. I also appreciate the fact that he has offered me a role which is multi-layered. This is something which I have never done before. It's also something which I guess many women in our country would relate to."

Onir revels in the fact that when Juhi signed the film, she asked a thousand questions about her role. "We had prolonged discussions and she asked me for every detail, since she wanted to know it all beforehand, this being a grey role and a first for her. It was Juhi's 77th film, but she seemed as enthused as a debutant," smiles Onir.

Bas Ek Pal also stars Sanjay Suri and Urmila Matondkar.
